Part 1

The applications are open for your new rune professor and the new professor will betaking over your classes very soon. To get you started in this new term, though, here is an opening class for you.

In this day and age, many people take the written language for granted and forget that runes themselves hold magic within them. It has always been said that there is magic in the words (a small rememberance of Dr. Who and the Shakespeare code!)

Therefore, this class will bring the rune magic back into our minds.

Part 2: Magic in the Words

Below is excerpts from a poem from the Norse Mythology, translated by WH Auden and PB Taylor.

Within this poem, he talks of charms and magic. Decipher each extract and write what charm you believe best fits the description and what magical propertiesyou think it may hold. (5 points per charm reading)

1. There are many talismans associated with this form of magic. Select one and discuss the magical properties it may hold. (10)

The tree of life is one of the most scared geometry symbols in a talisman form. It’s based on the teaching of Jewish Kabbalah. The tree of life has an instruction book called Sefer Yetzira. The book explains how the tree of life’s creation came to be and this involved the 10 divine numbers of Gods. This God is the creator of the 22 letters of Hebrew alphabet.

2. Explain the lay of the nine twigs. (10)
The nine twings is a poem. Here is the poem:
There are nine sprouts against nine poisons. A snake came crawling, it bit a man Then Wooden took nine glory-twigs, Smote the serpent so that it flew into nine parts, There Apple brought this to pass against poison, That she nevermore would enter her house!

Thyme and Fennel, a pair great in power, The Wise Lord holy in heaven, Wrought these herbs while He hung on the cross; He placed and put them in the seven worlds to aid all, poor and rich.
It stands against pain, resists the venom, It has power against three and against thirty, against a friend’s hand, and against sudden trick, against witchcraft of vile creatures!

Now these nine herbs avail against nine evil spirits, Against nine poisons and against nine infectious diseases, Against the red poison, against the running poison Against the yellow poison, against the green poison, Against the black poison, against the dark poison, Against snake-blister, against water-blister, Against thorn-blister, against thistle-blister, Against ice-blister, against poison-blister, If any poison comes flying from the east or any comes from the north, Or any from the west upon the people.

Christ stood over disease of every kind. I alone know running water and the nine serpents heed it; May all pastures now spring up with herbs, the seas, all salt water, is destroyed, when I blow this poison from thee!

3. How would you prepare a charm for magical use? (5)

1. Taking the wood, bone or stone and carve it or cut it.
2. Painting the runes with red ochre paint or magician’s blood.
3. Sing to your rune by empowering them or speaking when appropriate.
4. Sending the rune spell to its destination (if it is not a permanent talisman), often by burning.
5. Making an offering by giving thanks to the Gods

Thanks to the quote saying that it needs help its then easy to decide that the best rune for the job would be the Fehu of hope.

Thanks to the quote saying that it is in thick of battle then there is only one rune thats best for this quote and it would be the Thurisaz rune of destructive force.

Thanks to the quote saying that it bonds burst from the hands, meaning its stressed or overwhelmed, thats why the Nauthiz rune would be perfect for this situation. It helps to deal with obstacles.

This is great example of how the Eihwaz rune would protect the person and harm the hater.

The rune Hagalaz deals with mother nature and its force of power. A great rune to use in this situation as it allows the caster to help control the floods.

Practical bindrunes are one of the talismans with which runes has been associated. Just as their name suggests, they have a practical use. The bindrunes can do many things, depending on the runes they are inscribed with, bindrunes can “improve health, business, or financial success, harmony with a partner, love with someone else, help with weight loss, personal protection, such as the safety or security of your home and personal possessions”. They are also able to strengthen mental abilities like “memory…emotion…strength of will…and fairness”. The bindrunes magic is invoked by engraving one or two combined runes in a single design onto the surface of the stone or piece of wood that is being charmed. The thing the bindrune is carved into must be “consecrated”, which is an ancient and secret ritual that empowers the rune. Actually, you can engrave up to eight runes onto a bindrune, but it is recommended that the simpler design, the better. The runes will release a controlled amount of magic to perform the task that is desired. A sort of “runic force field” is created. One of the most important things to remember about practical bindrunes is that they are only used to help, never to hurt. Any attempt to do otherwise will backfire upon the user in a most unpleasant manner.

2. Explain the lay of the nine twigs. (10)
The lay of the nine twigs (of Woden) is a poem that describes how to cure people. I have included it below:

smote then the adder that it flew apart into nine (parts).
There apple and poison brought it about
that she never would dwell in the house.

He established and sent them into the seven worlds,
to the poor and the rich, for all a remedy.
She stands against pain, she assaults poison,
who has power against three and against thirty,

[wuldorgeflogenum, "fugitives from glory"],
against nine poisons and against nine flying venoms:

The lay of the nine twigs is designed to cure a wound of poisons. The nine herbs named in the poem-Mugwort, waybroad open from the east, lamb's cress, attorlathe, maythe, nettle, crab-apple, chervil and fennel-are pounded together into dust. Before they are made into the dust, however, the charm or galdor is sung onto each herb three times, and the same for the apple (from which the juice is made).This powder is then mixed with soap and apple juice. In a separate bowl, a paste of water and ashes is made and some fennel is boiled into it. This later mixture is then beat into the herbal mixture. The salve is applied to the wound before and after the ceremony. Someone should also sing into the mouth and into both of his ears, and on the wound. The same charm should be sung as before he applied the salve.

3. How would you prepare a charm for magical use? (5)

Carve or paint the symbol you desire onto a piece of wood, clay, or anything else that’s good and sturdy. However, if you choose stone, carving is very difficult, so painting the symbol on will do just fine. You should then pray, or use a personal ritual you are familiar with to consecrate the rune. This will charge it with its own purpose, and without this, the rune will not function. A ritual that generally works well is to call upon your God/dess, the Universal Life Force, or whomever you feel the most spiritually connected with. Pray to your ancestors, especially those who were magical, your familiars-power animals-local spirits of the land or any other spirit you wish to help you. You must be certain to visualize and verbalize the purpose of the charm. The more specific, the stronger the magic. Never use negatives. Use positive words only. The next part involved is a bit painful. You must prick your finger and mix your blood with red ochre, acrylic paint, or red India ink. Feeling squeamish? Don’t worry, you can simply use henna, ink, any marking pen, or anything already stated above. Use the red mixture-blood optional-and paint over the symbol while continuing to verbalize what you want it to do. Burning a paper image of the symbol will help the consecration process, but be sure to keep another copy. It is possible to use the Galdr sounds-the names the runes were called in Old Norse. When you have done that, say the galdr-ed form of “the ALU (Ansuz-Laguz-Uruz) formula, which is pronounced Ahlu”. This means “It is sealed, so mote it be”. Thus will add finality to your charm. It should be noted that inscribing all of the runes onto your charms isn’t necessary. Runes are all about mystery, after all. Once you’re all done with the charm, carry it around with you, sleep with it under your pillow, or however else you think to use it. The magic will work.

The Emperor Talisman is a very useful talisman. If you have some sort of problem that needs to be solved then just wear the Emperor Talisman and whatever problem you have will be solved. If you were wearing this while someone tried to place evil magic on you while you were wearing this you will be protected from the evil magic and you will be unharmed.
